Modern design french press consists of a narrow cylindrical glass jug, equipped with a lid and a stainless plunger, which fits tightly in the cylinder glass beaker and which has a fine wire mesh acting as a filter. Coffee is brewed by placing the coffee and water together, leaving to brew for a few minutes, then depressing the plunger to trap the coffee grinds at the bottom of the glass jug. A French press requires coffee of a more coarse grind than that used for a drip brew coffee filter, such as produced by a burr mill grinder rather than the whirling blade variety, as a finer grind will seep through the press filter and into the coffee. Because the coffee grounds remain in direct contact with the brewing water and the grinds are filtered from the water via a mesh instead of a paper filter, coffee brewed with the French press captures more of the coffee's flavour and essential oils, which would become trapped in a traditional drip brew machine's paper filters. I bought this product after trying coffee produced with a similar moka that my girlfriend bought on her 1-month trip to Italy. It is a quite curious thing that her moka pot was bought at Italy but made in China, and mine was bought here at Amazon and made in Italy: the magic of Internet.



Great coffee pot, however, it will only produce great coffee if used the right way with good coffee beans ground the correct way. Also it must stay on low flame the right time. After getting the hang of it, you will certainly enjoy a great strong coffee in espresso-sized quantities; as you certainly do not expect this moka to produce a typical american supersized jumbo mug cup of coffee. Great things come in small quantities, no need to supersize everything.

Ran out and bought this from BB&B - very excited to use it after reading all the positive reviews, BUT I will be exchanging because of the following...



When I opened it, I noticed a glob of clear gel that had dripped into the coffee ground basket. Upon closer inspection, it looks like a couple of dollops of clear gel (consistency of clear silicone gel) where placed on the rubber gasket.



Furthermore, there were a number of black specs in the water reservoir - couldn't tell if they were coffee grounds or residue from the process of making it. I don't mind the black specs as much as the gel - since I don't know what it is. Made me wonder if this was cleaned and returned or if this is just part of the manufacturing process.



So, I'll go and find another in store and inspect it before I exchange or return.



If someone has any insight on this - maybe they can post.

With an Aerolatte Milk Frother, you could make seriously good latte. It was a success for me on the first try even though I had never used this kind of coffee makers before.



They should not call it a 3-cup. It's a single cup service. The entire thing is so tiny (pleasantly so in fact), it took me by surprise. You could travel with this with absolutely no problem.



It's a bit more involved than an automatic coffee maker, but this is fun and so functional. The design is elegant and requires no electricity and has no complex mechanical parts. You get a feeling that this is going to last for a long time. I had two Mr. Coffee espresso makers in a roll in the last 15 months. Both broke when the pressure pump failed, the first in 12 months, the second in just a bit over a month. This led me to believe that cheap pressure-based espresso makers simply don't work. And they are bulky and noisy even if they do work. This Moka Express is a much better concept (and even a better lifestyle I would argue).

The first few weeks were great until I moved to an apt with gas stove. I ended up melting the gasket and the handle. It is now permanently unusable and my entire house ended up with melting rubber aroma. mmm goo~d. Not.
